The Team

J and L Consulting was founded in March 2013 to assist and help the Laboratory Animal Industry within Australia, New Zealand and Japan. J and L Consulting is a small professional business operated from Dunedin, New Zealand. Other consultants may offer similar services, but we believe our services come with a personal, friendly and helpful touch. John and Lesley Schofield have all the experience needed to assist you to smooth any issues in your existing programme and to get you back on track. Our aim is to add value to your programme with helpful suggestions.

John is board certified by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine and has 33 years experience as a laboratory animal veterinarian working in biomedical research. Together with his wife Lesley, they spent 12 years working in Chicago at the University of Illinois Medical Center. Upon returning to New Zealand in 1991, John was appointed to Director of the Department of Laboratory Animal Sciences at the University of Otago, Dunedin and was responsible for the welfare of research animals at the largest laboratory animal facility in New Zealand. John was also involved in teaching graduate students using experimental animals. He developed equipment to assist students and researchers use animals in the most effective and humane manner.
John retired from the University in 2013.

Lesley has 30 years experience as a microbiologist working in the laboratory animal industry at the University of Illinois Medical Center (Chicago) and the University of Otago (Dunedin). She was instrumental in establishing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) for all aspects of husbandry and quality control while at the University. She is also a registered RLATG and CMAR and has recently retired from the position of Manager of the largest laboratory animal facility in New Zealand at the University of Otago.
